The Best Sunscreen: Sun Protection Recommendations

Our patients frequently ask us this question: “What is the best sunscreen?”

Our answer is usually this: “The best sunscreen is one that you use.”

Using sunblock regularly can minimize consequences of overexposure to the sun’s damaging rays like sunburns, premature aging, wrinkling, and skin cancer including melanoma.

The proper use of sunblock is important as well. Apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun, as the chemicals in sunscreen take time to bind to your skin in order to become fully protective. Lip sunscreen should be applied 45 to 60 minutes before you go out in the sun. Reapply every 2 to 4 hours as recommended by the product manufacturer.

There are two types of sun protection: physical and chemical sunblock/sunscreen. Physical sunblock uses physical UV filters, which protect the skin from the sun by deflecting or blocking the sun’s harmful rays. Chemical sunscreens use chemical UV filters that work by absorbing, or in some cases scattering, the sun’s rays.

Although each person’s skin is different, following are some of the brands that dermatologists have found to be favorable.
